We spent a total of 8 days and nights in the Galapagos Islands and 1 day and two nights in Quito, Ecuador in September,2006.
We visited 5 of the 19 Galapagos Islands; Floreana, Santa Fe, San Cristobal, Isabella and Santa Cruz, as well as a couple islets or rather rock outcroppings that were perfect for diving and snorkeling.
Charles Darwin visited the Galapagos in 1835 and the observations he made of the wildlife led to his theory of evolution by natural selection. It was a dream come true to experience and observe for ourselves the foreign landscape and wildlife that inspired Darwin.
Our trip was incredibly active with the help of Active South America, www.activesouthamerica.com. Our group of 10 experienced hiking a volcano, kayaking, snorkeling and diving, boogey boarding, and mountain biking. We also had plenty of time to see Quito, Ecuador with it's beautiful old churches and scenic mountaintop vistas at the top of the city's cable car. We enjoyed some great restaurants and a small art district with wonderful galleries. We were exhausted after a long day of hiking Quito! The hills rival San Francisco!
We had the opportunity to swim with sharks and sea lions. We saw marine iguanas, giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, frigate birds,
Darwin's finches and some of the most beautiful and rugged terrain in the world. Please e-mail us with any questions you have and thanks for visiting www.peteandmelissa.com!
